Will future Galaxy phones receive a speed boost from a critical component?

Samsung, known for quickly adopting new memory technologies, upgraded its high-end smartphones in 2023 from Universal Flash Storage (UFS) 3.1 to UFS 4.0. The company plans to further enhance performance with UFS 5.0 chips for its Galaxy S and Galaxy Z series. UFS 5.0, almost ready for deployment, is expected to debut in smartphones by 2027. This new standard promises sequential data read speeds up to 10.8GB/s, double that of UFS 4.0, and improved AI capabilities. It features ink equalisation for better signal integrity, a dedicated power supply rail for noise isolation, and enhanced data security through inline hashing. The chips are designed to be more power-efficient, leading to quicker phone booting, faster app loading, and enhanced camera processing, resulting in significantly improved overall performance. The finalisation of the UFS 5.0 standard is anticipated next year, with compatible storage chips ready by the year’s end, suggesting a potential launch of UFS 5.0-equipped phones by late next year or early 2027.
