The University of Guelph has secured $1.7 million from the Canada Research Chairs program to bolster projects focused on pain research, antibiotic alternatives for animal health, and improving water safety. This funding is part of a larger federal investment in science and research, totaling over $690 million, with $198 million allocated to 259 new and renewed research chairs. The announcement was made by Mélanie Joly, Minister of Industry.
Dr. Shayan Sharif, interim vice-president of research and innovation, expressed gratitude for the support, emphasizing its role in addressing complex health challenges and fostering sustainable systems. The university’s three awardees include Dr. Giannina Descalzi, who is delving into the neuroscience of pain to develop new therapeutic strategies, and Dr. Nicole Ricker, who is exploring alternatives to antibiotics to combat antimicrobial resistance in livestock.
Additionally, nearly $7.6 million was awarded from the Research Support Fund to help Canadian institutions manage research operations and maintain high-quality research environments, reinforcing Canada’s position as a leader in global research.
