How can we co-exist with AI?

Researchers, artists, and scholars recently gathered at the University of Toronto to discuss the societal impacts of artificial intelligence. The event, co-hosted by U of T’s BMO Lab and University College, featured keynotes from AI pioneers Geoffrey Hinton and Fei-Fei Li. Hinton advocated for developing AI systems that coexist with humans, while Li emphasized shared responsibility in AI development. Discussions also highlighted the need for inclusive AI by questioning data sources and considering marginalized perspectives. Additionally, the unique human ability to engage in conversation was contrasted with AI’s limitations in this area, underscoring the distinct nature of human communication.
