Is Amazon’s Workforce Set to Shrink with AI Advancements?

Amazon is set to undergo a transformation in its workforce, as CEO Andy Jassy has announced a reduction in corporate headcount due to the increasing adoption of generative AI. In a memo to employees, Jassy indicated that AI tools will soon take over a wider range of tasks, reducing the need for certain job roles. He urged employees to enhance their skills in AI and collaborate with smaller, more agile teams to boost efficiency. This move marks a shift in Amazon’s approach to productivity and staffing, following recent layoffs affecting over 27,000 employees since 2022, including cuts in North America stores and devices divisions. With 1.56 million employees globally as of March 2025, Amazon is integrating AI into various internal operations, from warehouse robotics to inventory and fulfillment optimization. This trend mirrors actions by other tech companies like Shopify and Klarna, who have also linked workforce reductions to AI investments. Jassy has described generative AI as a transformative force and a significant cost-saving measure, prompting HR and workforce leaders to reconsider workforce planning and reskilling strategies as AI continues to redefine job roles across sectors.
