What impact will the heat have on the nuclear plants starting Monday?

France is currently experiencing an intense heatwave, with a peak recorded in the western part of the country that is expected to shift eastward by Sunday. EDF has warned that this heatwave could impact the electricity production of nuclear power plants as early as Monday, particularly at the Bugey site in Ain, due to production restrictions linked to the high temperatures of the Rhône River. Météo-France has issued an orange heatwave alert for 16 departments. Although cooler weather is beginning to return to regions like Normandy and Brittany, several departments remain on alert. Nuclear power plants, which use river water for cooling, must adhere to strict thresholds to protect the environment. The Health Minister has emphasized the importance of staying protected from the heat and staying hydrated, while the Labor Minister has stressed the need to adapt working conditions. Cities such as Tours and Rennes have opened parks and gardens at night to provide cool refuges. The heat also increases the risk of fires and ozone pollution, leading to traffic restrictions in certain areas. The frequency of heatwaves has accelerated in recent years, underscoring the impact of climate change.
