Personal and health information from numerous individuals associated with Albemarle County was compromised in a ransomware attack on the county’s IT systems this past June. An investigation, recently concluded in collaboration with the county’s insurance provider, outlined the breach’s timeline and scope. The attack began on the afternoon of June 10 and continued overnight, compromising protected health information related to the county’s self-insured health plan by July 15. This data breach affected current and former local government and public school employees, their dependents, county residents, and individuals who have interacted with the county in various capacities. The compromised information includes personal details such as names, addresses, social security numbers, and health-related information. In response, Albemarle County has bolstered its cybersecurity measures and is offering free credit monitoring and identity restoration services to those affected. Registration for these services is open until March 17, 2026.
