Samsung Foundry has recently completed the tape-out of Tesla’s first 3nm semiconductor chip, the AI5, with Elon Musk expressing gratitude for their collaboration. The South Korean company is now on the verge of initiating mass production of this chip. Preparations at Samsung’s chip fabrication plant in Taylor, Texas, have been finalized, and a ceremony is planned for April 24, 2026, to celebrate the arrival of essential equipment. This event will feature key executives and representatives from suppliers worldwide. Following the installation and trial runs, full-scale production is anticipated to commence in the latter half of the year. The facility will initially produce Tesla’s AI5 chip, with future plans to manufacture the 2nm-based AI6 chip. Although the construction of the Taylor plant began in November 2022 and was initially slated for operation in late 2024, delays in securing orders altered the timeline. However, after securing a significant $16.5 billion order from Tesla, Samsung expedited the development of the facility.
