When Did Apple Launch the AirTag?

Five years ago, Apple’s AirTag item tracker made its debut, quickly becoming the world’s leading item tracker. Launched on April 30, 2021, alongside other Apple products like the M1 iMac and a new iPad Pro, the AirTag is a small, coin-shaped device with a stainless steel back and IP67 water resistance. It features a U1 Ultra Wideband chip that enables Precision Finding, guiding users to lost items through haptic, visual, and audio feedback. The AirTag integrates seamlessly with the Find My app, leveraging Bluetooth signals from nearby Apple devices to track lost items, even when they are out of direct range. Available for $29 individually or $99 for a four-pack, the AirTag also offers free engraving.

Despite its popularity, the AirTag faced controversies due to misuse for stalking and theft. Apple responded by enhancing setup warnings and clarifying legal ramifications. A class-action lawsuit in California highlighted concerns over its potential misuse, leading to collaborative efforts between Apple and Google to provide unwanted tracking alerts for both Android and iPhone users.

In January 2026, Apple introduced the second-generation AirTag, featuring enhanced Ultra Wideband capabilities, improved Bluetooth, and a louder speaker. Precision Finding now extends to Apple Watch Series 9 models and later. Despite its challenges, the AirTag remains a top seller, credited with helping users recover lost items like luggage and bicycles.
