How did China surpass the US in AI research at a global conference?

Chinese universities have notably surpassed their American counterparts in research output at a leading global artificial intelligence conference. An analysis of over 5,000 accepted papers highlighted that at the International Conference on Learning Representations (ICLR) in Rio de Janeiro, institutions from mainland China contributed about 44% of the total. Tsinghua University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Zhejiang University, and Peking University secured the top four global positions. If Hong Kong’s contributions are included with mainland China’s, the country’s share exceeds half of all papers presented. Tsinghua University alone had 332 accepted papers. In comparison, the United States accounted for around 32% of the papers, with Stanford University, Carnegie Mellon University, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology each producing roughly half as many papers as Tsinghua.
