As Apple enthusiasts prepare for the launch of the 20th-anniversary iPhone, there is already buzz about the 2028 model, which promises to be even more impressive. Apple plans to introduce an innovative display with curved edges on all sides for a seamless visual experience. This advanced “four-edge bending” OLED display is expected to first appear on the 2027 model, albeit with some potential issues like image distortion and brightness loss due to the use of a magnesium-silver alloy in the cathode layer. However, Apple is already working on improvements for the following year.
By 2028, Apple aims to enhance the display with indium zinc oxide cathodes, offering better transparency, reduced distortion, more consistent brightness, and narrower bezels. This means that while early adopters of the 20th-anniversary iPhone will enjoy a groundbreaking design, those who wait for the 2028 version might benefit from a more refined and visually appealing device.
Apple is also targeting a display without cutouts for the commemorative model, although integrating the Face ID system and front camera beneath the OLED panel remains a technological challenge. Ultimately, while the 20th-anniversary iPhone may capture attention with its historic design, the 2028 model could be the more desirable purchase.
