What’s new in cycling tech at the Tour Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes?

As the Tour Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes unfolds, cycling enthusiasts have been treated to a preview of innovations likely to feature in the upcoming Tour de France. Despite the absence of the top contenders, the race has showcased four new bike models and a range of technological advancements, offering insights into the trends that may dominate the Grand Départ.

In terms of tyre choices, the debate over optimal width continues. Continental-sponsored teams have largely opted for lighter, 28mm tyres for the mountainous terrain, despite the availability of wider options. Meanwhile, Vittoria-sponsored teams have experimented with slightly wider tyres, ranging from 29mm to 30mm. The choice of tyre width is often influenced by the rims being used, with teams like Uno-X tailoring their selections to maximize performance.

Tyre innovation remains a focal point, with Michelin unveiling its new Power Cup S tyre, joining the ranks of Specialized’s Cotton TLR and Pirelli’s P Zero Race TLR SL-R. This development suggests that the evolution of road-racing tyres shows no signs of slowing down.

Handlebar regulations have also seen updates, with a new minimum width of 400mm now in effect. This change aims to balance rider comfort and aerodynamic efficiency, allowing for personalized adjustments while adhering to the new standards.

Lightweight race bikes continue to hold their ground, as evidenced by the introduction of a new Ridley prototype and the Van Rysel model by Paul Seixas. These bikes combine aerodynamic features with reduced weight, maintaining their relevance in professional cycling.

Additionally, the trend of using wax-based chain lubricants has gained momentum among professional teams. These lubricants offer improved drivetrain efficiency by reducing friction and contamination, despite the labor-intensive process of maintaining waxed chains.

As these technological advancements shape the landscape of professional cycling, teams are strategically adopting innovations to gain a competitive edge in the upcoming Tour de France.
