Samsung has introduced its groundbreaking UFS 5.0 storage chip, touted as the fastest globally. This advancement is poised to enhance performance in smartphones and tablets, offering a remarkable upgrade over the current UFS 4.x chips found in devices like the Galaxy S26 Ultra. The new chip might make its debut with the Galaxy S27 series in early 2027.
Built on the latest JEDEC standard, Samsung’s UFS 5.0 chip boasts impressive sequential read speeds of up to 10.8GB/s and write speeds of 9.5GB/s. These speeds more than double those of UFS 4.1, setting a new benchmark in storage technology. The chip’s compact design measures 7.5 × 13 × 0.9mm, making it 16.7% smaller than its predecessor.
The enhanced speed is expected to facilitate quicker app launches, faster file transfers, and improved device responsiveness, while also benefiting on-device AI applications by accelerating large dataset processing. Additionally, the UFS 5.0 chip is 40% more power-efficient, potentially extending battery life due to innovations like clock gating and multi-voltage operation.
Samsung is gearing up for mass production of the UFS 5.0 chips in late 2026, with capacities reaching up to 1TB. Beyond smartphones and tablets, this storage solution is versatile enough for use in laptops, smartwatches, and extended reality devices.
