Apple is preparing a waterproof iPad mini, expected by October, that would be the first in the lineup to achieve water resistance via a fully sealed chassis rather than traditional gaskets and adhesives.

To keep out water and dust, Apple is reportedly developing a vibration-based acoustic system that removes the need for speaker grilles. Sound would be produced by flat areas of the chassis acting as diaphragms (a surface-transducer approach), eliminating one of the main ingress points on current tablets. That method contrasts with the iPhone’s approach, which relies on adhesives and seals around openings.
OLED display, performance and other expected upgrades
Alongside waterproofing, the new iPad mini is expected to switch to an OLED display, making it the second iPad line after the iPad Pro to make that jump. A Korean report claims Samsung Display has already started mass production of OLED panels for this model; another source points to an 8.4‑inch LTPS panel running at 60 Hz, which would rule out ProMotion. Code fragments and a macOS debug kit have also hinted at a CPU boost, with references to the A19 Pro and even the as‑yet‑unannounced A20 Pro.
A step toward waterproof e-readers
A hermetically sealed chassis could make the iPad mini better suited for reading near water and other humid environments, effectively moving it closer to a waterproof e‑reader use case.
