The feature requires the H2 chip. Compatible models: AirPods Pro (2nd generation), AirPods Pro (3rd generation), AirPods (4th generation) and AirPods Max (2nd generation). Earlier models, including the original AirPods Max, do not support the feature.
How to enable and tweak the custom AirPods EQ
After connecting your AirPods to your iPhone:
– Open Settings and tap your AirPods at the top of the screen.
– Go to Audio and Routing, then EQ.
– Select Custom and drag the Bass, Mid and Treble sliders to shape the frequency response.
The screen shows a media playback control with the last-played item so you can hear changes immediately. To revert, tap Reset or choose Recommended to restore Apple’s default profile.
Prerequisites: beta firmware and installation
The feature requires the current AirPods beta firmware. If the EQ option does not appear:
– Pair your AirPods with the iPhone.
– In Settings > AirPods, enable AirPods Beta Updates.
– Place the AirPods in their case, connect the case to power and leave it near your unlocked iPhone. The update downloads in the background; installation should take no more than about 30 minutes.
How this EQ differs from the existing option
iOS already had an EQ under Settings > Apps > Music, but it only applied to playback in Apple Music and worked across all headphones. The iOS 27 Custom AirPods EQ is specific to compatible AirPods and affects all audio sources, offering finer, device-specific tuning for your pair.
Availability on other devices and timing
The same controls appear in iPadOS 27 and macOS 27 Golden Gate (via System Settings) when your AirPods are paired. iOS 27 and the corresponding OS updates are currently in public beta, with a general release scheduled for September.
