The Nigerian Army has detected an attempted cyber breach of its official X (formerly Twitter) account at about 5pm on Saturday, August 29, 2026, the Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, said in a statement.
Nigerian Army response and guidance
The incident is being treated as a cybersecurity breach, and immediate technical and protective measures were activated to secure the account, prevent further unauthorised access and protect the integrity of information disseminated through the platform, Anele said.
“The Nigerian Army assures members of the public, the media and other stakeholders that appropriate measures are underway to fully secure the affected account and restore exclusive administrative control,” she said.
The Army urged members of the public and the media to disregard any suspicious, misleading, unauthorised or unverified content emanating from the affected account pending the resolution of the incident, and stressed that such content should not be regarded as representing the official position of the Nigerian Army.
Security measures and verification advice
The Army advised the public to verify information through its other official communication platforms while efforts to fully secure the X account continue. According to Anele, the Nigerian Army remains committed to information integrity, operational security and responsible strategic communication.
She appreciated members of the public for their vigilance, understanding and cooperation, and said further updates would be provided as necessary.
