iPhone Duo Confirmed, Ending the iPhone Ultra Rumor

Apple’s long‑rumored foldable iPhone has been officially named the iPhone Duo, ending months of speculation that it would be called the iPhone Ultra.

Journalists had traded names for the device for months. John Gruber accurately guessed the iPhone Duo name as early as April, and that name circulated again on social media in the days before the announcement. The iPhone Ultra label became widespread in rumor coverage after Mark Gurman floated it as a possible name in March, and he later reported that many Apple employees referred to the device as the iPhone Ultra. Former Macworld reporter Filipe Espósito also cited a source who said the foldable iPhone would be called the iPhone Ultra; that source proved to be wrong. To his credit, Gurman confirmed the iPhone Duo name in a last‑minute report published shortly before Apple announced the device.

Why iPhone Duo, not iPhone Ultra

The choice to avoid the iPhone Ultra name aligns with the device’s feature set. The iPhone Duo offers a large 7.6‑inch inner display when opened, but it does not include certain features typically associated with an “ultra” model: a dedicated Telephoto camera, Face ID, or an Action button.

The Duo name is straightforwardly descriptive: it refers to the device’s dual screens.

Branding context and what comes next

Apple has used Duo branding before, notably for the PowerBook Duo laptops in the 1990s and the MagSafe Duo Charger in the early 2020s. The company also applies Ultra branding across several products, including the Apple Watch Ultra, CarPlay Ultra, and the M1 Ultra through M5 Ultra family of chips. With rumors of a special 20th‑anniversary iPhone, there may still be an opportunity for Apple to use the iPhone Ultra name in the future.

For now, though, the iPhone Ultra rumor is dead.
