Is global consensus on AI development and security achievable?

In Shanghai, China’s Premier Li Qiang emphasized the urgent need for a global consensus on balancing artificial intelligence development with security risks. Speaking at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference, Li highlighted the importance of governance and open-source development, announcing plans for a new Chinese-led international AI cooperation body. This comes amidst ongoing tech competition between Beijing and Washington, especially following U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent strategy to reduce regulations and boost AI development. Li’s call for a balance between progress and safety reflects growing concerns about AI’s impact on misinformation, employment, and technological control. Nobel laureate Geoffrey Hinton likened the challenge to taming a “cute tiger cub,” underscoring the importance of managing AI’s growth responsibly.
