China’s leading AI start-up, DeepSeek, is under scrutiny as speculation mounts about the release of its next-generation R2 reasoning model. This comes in the wake of OpenAI’s recent unveiling of its GPT-5 model. DeepSeek, which gained attention with its V3 model in December and the R1 model in January, has not made significant updates to its products recently, aside from minor revisions. Although the market anticipated a new model soon after R1’s launch, the Hangzhou-based company, founded by computer scientist Liang Wenfeng, has not announced a timeline for the R2 model. Reports suggest that technical challenges with Huawei’s Ascend AI chips have delayed the model’s development.
