An Israeli hospital has made significant progress in growing kidneys in laboratories and is now seeking funding, including from China, to move into clinical trials. Sheba Medical Centre, in partnership with Tel Aviv University, has successfully developed a synthetic 3D organ culture, known as an organoid, which has survived beyond 34 weeks—a notable achievement in regenerative medicine. Previous efforts had not surpassed four weeks. These kidney organoids hold great promise, allowing researchers to better understand kidney diseases and conduct drug tests on human-like models instead of relying on mice. The organoids secrete biomolecules that could potentially aid in the repair of damaged kidneys. The focus is now on converting these laboratory successes into viable medical treatments.
