The launch of the Galaxy XR headset initially generated significant excitement, with many eager to see Samsung’s advancements in augmented reality (AR). However, concerns persist about the lack of compelling AR applications. Despite hopes that Samsung would enhance its existing apps for the XR platform, the reality has been underwhelming.
The Galaxy XR lacks standout AR apps, with Google Maps being the closest contender. A glaring missed opportunity is the absence of Samsung’s AR visualization tool, available on mobile for visualizing products like TVs in real-world settings, from the XR headset. This feature could have showcased Galaxy XR’s capabilities and promoted Samsung’s ecosystem but remains unavailable.
Moreover, the SmartThings app, which could have offered transformative experiences like 3D Map View and remote control of Samsung devices via the headset, is not compatible with Galaxy XR. This incompatibility extends to basic functionalities, as the app doesn’t even run in a 2D window on the device.
The situation is disappointing, especially considering the anticipation and potential of Samsung’s XR venture. The lack of integration of Samsung’s own AR apps suggests an unprepared launch. There is hope that Samsung will address these issues promptly to enhance the Galaxy XR experience.
