Tanzania’s economy has suffered significant losses due to recent internet disruptions during the election period, with damages exceeding $238 million. The nationwide internet shutdown, spanning 126 hours from October 29 to November 3, 2025, resulted in an economic hit of $72.3 million. Additionally, the ongoing suspension of the platform X, in place since May 21, 2025, has cost nearly $1 million daily, amounting to $165.8 million over 166 days. These figures reflect direct productivity and trade losses, excluding broader socio-political impacts. Despite restored general connectivity, concerns remain about persistent bandwidth throttling in some regions. The internet restrictions are seen as violations of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, prompting calls for the Tanzanian government to restore full access and halt future disruptions, particularly during democratic events. Internet Service Providers are urged to maintain network stability and transparency in state-ordered shutdowns.
