A new wave of plant-based meat alternatives (PBMAs) is gaining popularity, offering concentrated plant protein sources that mimic the taste and texture of traditional meats, particularly red meat. This trend aligns with health agencies’ recommendations to increase the ratio of plant to animal protein in our diets for both health and environmental benefits. While whole plant foods like legumes are ideal, their consumption is unlikely to surge without significant policy changes. PBMAs, despite being processed and often high in sodium, provide a viable alternative with their high protein content and nutrient fortification, addressing common deficiencies in plant-based diets. Although they may lack some of the benefits of whole legumes, PBMAs offer health and environmental advantages over animal products. For most people, incorporating a daily serving of PBMAs can fit well within a balanced diet, with potential for higher consumption in those with increased protein or calorie needs.
