Is AI content shaping Hungary’s upcoming elections?

In Hungary, ahead of the upcoming elections, AI-generated content is making waves on social media, particularly in posts associated with Prime Minister Viktor Orban. A notable example includes a video depicting Hungarian soldiers heading to Ukraine and returning in caskets. Orban, who has led the country since 2010, is facing a significant challenge from opposition leader Peter Magyar. Politicians from all sides are increasingly using AI technology, similar to tactics employed by former US President Donald Trump. This trend raises concerns about the potential influence of AI on public opinion due to its capacity to evoke strong emotional responses. Orban’s supporters, particularly the National Resistance Movement, have heavily invested in AI, spending over 1.5 million euros on promoting content targeting Magyar. This spending surpasses any other political entity in the EU. Despite new EU regulations mandating clear labeling of political ads, many AI-generated videos remain unlabeled. Magyar has also utilized AI, albeit in a more satirical manner, and has criticized Orban’s use of the technology. The Hungarian government, while supporting the EU AI Act, is also working on its own AI ethics code. Experts warn of the toxic potential of AI-generated content in political campaigns, as it can significantly impact public perception due to its emotional appeal.
