Over the past year, I conducted an experiment with my iPhone 16 Pro Max, setting a charge limit at 80 percent to explore its effects on battery longevity. As of now, the battery’s maximum capacity stands at 94 percent with 299 charge cycles. Despite efforts to maintain the battery between 20 and 80 percent, I found the 80 percent limit often inconvenient, especially when using the camera or GPS on the go.
Charging was evenly split between MagSafe and USB-C, with heat being a concern during wireless charging, particularly in warmer conditions. Interestingly, my iPhone 15 Pro Max, which also had an 80 percent charge limit, showed similar battery capacity after two years.
Comparing with a colleague’s iPhone 16 Pro Max, which wasn’t limited, his device maintained a slightly higher capacity of 96 percent with 308 cycles. This raises questions about the effectiveness of the 80 percent charge limit over a year. It might be more beneficial over a longer period or perhaps adjusting the limit to 90 or 95 percent could yield better results.
As I transition to the iPhone 17 Pro Max, I continue this experiment, curious about the impact of a larger battery and new materials on battery health. What are your thoughts on the 80 percent charge limit? Share your battery capacity and cycle count in the comments.
