Last month, a significant number of volunteers gathered at the University of North Carolina Asheville to participate in “Wrap the Woods,” an event focused on protecting a 54-acre urban forest from development. This week, a local architecture firm is set to present alternative community-driven plans to the university’s proposed Millennial Campus project. Scott Burroughs of This Land Studio will share the outcomes of a community visioning workshop for the UNCA Woods at a meeting scheduled for Thursday, October 9, at 6:30 p.m. The presentation, part of the Save the Woods general meeting, will be held at Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church. The proposed development includes a 5,000-seat soccer stadium and concert venue, along with retail and housing spaces. Burroughs will reveal conceptual designs offering different locations and configurations for the project, developed during a three-day design charrette in August. The event attracted local architects, designers, residents, and officials. Following the presentation, updates on advocacy efforts and future plans will be shared, and community involvement opportunities will be discussed. Merchandise like T-shirts and yard signs will be available for purchase. The Save UNCA Woods initiative remains committed to preserving this vital urban forest and community green space.
