The Indian government has issued a significant security alert for users of the Microsoft Edge browser, particularly following the recent rollout of its AI agent features. This alert, rated highly severe by the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In), warns of a vulnerability in the Chromium-based browser. The flaw, identified as a “Use after free” issue in the Safe Browsing feature, could allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code by sending specially crafted requests. This poses a serious threat, especially given the privacy-centric nature of the Safe Browsing feature, which is designed to prevent tracking and history recording. Users with Microsoft Edge versions prior to 141.0.3537.85 are urged to update immediately to mitigate these risks. The update process involves accessing the browser’s menu, navigating to ‘Help and Feedback,’ and selecting ‘About Microsoft Edge’ to check for and install the latest version. This security alert coincides with the introduction of new AI features in Edge, as Microsoft aims to enhance user experience amidst growing competition in the AI browser market.
