Northern Gritstone, an innovative investment firm in life sciences and deeptech, has spearheaded a £4 million seed investment into PhovIR, a startup emerging from the University of Manchester. This initiative is co-led with SCVC, a deeptech specialist. Founded by Dr. Tim Echermeyer and based at the Graphene Engineering Innovation Centre, PhovIR has also welcomed Dr. Steve Turley as executive-Chair. The company has developed a revolutionary Near Infra-Red (NIR) optical sensor technology capable of identifying the ‘optical fingerprint’ of various substances in a compact device. Unlike existing bulky and costly NIR sensors, PhovIR’s technology can be manufactured on a silicon chip, offering a small, lightweight, and affordable solution that could be integrated into devices like smartwatches or phones. This platform technology holds significant promise across various sectors, including health, industrial safety, pollution monitoring, and agriculture.
