The IRS has announced the suspension of its Direct File program for the 2026 tax season, a service previously offered to taxpayers in 25 states. This decision aligns with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s belief that private sector solutions could be more effective. The move follows the “One Big, Beautiful Bill,” which prompted an IRS task force to evaluate the costs of Direct File and explore alternatives. Despite its low usage, the program was appreciated by users, with a majority expressing interest in its continuation. For the 2026 tax season, taxpayers will still have access to other free federal tax preparation programs, including IRS Free File for those earning $84,000 or less, the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program for individuals earning $67,000 or less, and Tax Counseling for the Elderly. Additionally, some private companies offer free filing options based on income or occupation, and Free File Fillable Forms remain available for all taxpayers, although they are not guided.
