Chinese paper mills are reportedly leveraging generative artificial intelligence tools to produce fake academic papers on a large scale. Workers in these mills are said to use AI chatbots to complete over 30 academic articles weekly. These paper mills, which offer authorship or fabricate entire papers, thrive in China’s competitive academic environment, where strict publishing targets are common for students and researchers. They advertise their ghostwriting services on e-commerce and social media platforms, often under the guise of academic support or editing services. The advent of affordable generative AI tools has significantly increased the output of these mills, which previously depended on manual labor. One agency in Wuhan reportedly handles over 40,000 orders annually, with prices ranging from a few hundred to several thousand US dollars.
