Has Space Quarters secured $5 million to boost space construction technology?

Space Quarters Inc., a deep-tech startup from Tohoku University, has successfully raised $5 million in seed funding to advance its space construction technologies. The funding round was led by Frontier Innovations Inc., with contributions from Keio Innovation Initiative, Global Brain’s Tokyu Construction–GB Innovation Fund, XTech Ventures, Mitsubishi UFJ Capital, and SMBC Venture Capital. This investment will support the development of space construction robotics and electron beam welding systems, crucial for assembling large-scale infrastructure in orbit and on the lunar surface, paving the way for sustainable human activities beyond Earth.

Founded in 2022, Space Quarters aims to revolutionize space infrastructure by enabling on-site assembly of orbital and lunar structures through its proprietary robotic welding technologies. Unlike traditional methods that rely on launching preassembled structures from Earth, Space Quarters’ approach involves launching modular materials and autonomously assembling them in space, significantly reducing costs and allowing for the creation of larger and more durable structures.

The company has collaborated with major organizations such as Sky Perfect JSAT, JAXA, Obayashi Corporation, and IHI Aerospace, steadily progressing towards commercial implementation. The new funding will be used to expand the development team, enhance testing facilities, and prepare for on-orbit and lunar demonstration missions scheduled for 2027–2028. Having completed ground-based proof-of-concept tests, Space Quarters is now focusing on accelerating system-level development and validation for its upcoming official service launch.
