Is a Record Share of Startup Funding Going to $100M+ Rounds?

In 2025, the proportion of U.S. startup funding directed towards rounds of $100 million or more has reached a historic high, driven largely by the surge in AI-related investments. Approximately 70% of all U.S. startup funding this year has been allocated to these large-scale financings, totaling around $157 billion across over 300 rounds. While this year’s dollar sum isn’t a record high, it reflects a significant concentration of capital among a few major players. OpenAI’s massive $40 billion financing alone represents a substantial portion of this funding. Globally, the trend is similar, with about 60% of startup funding in 2025 going to $100 million-plus rounds, comparable to the peak levels of 2021. The ongoing debate is whether this trend signifies a temporary phase or a new normal in venture funding, as investors continue to focus on securing stakes in potentially successful companies by making larger investments at higher valuations.
