With the launch of Tesla’s Robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, comparisons are being drawn with Baidu’s Apollo Go, a driverless taxi service by the Chinese tech giant. Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk announced the service on X, formerly known as Twitter, highlighting it as the result of a decade of effort. Baidu’s Apollo Go began testing in September 2019 and launched commercially in 2022. Tesla’s service is currently operational in Austin, with plans for expansion based on performance, and initial rides were offered to select influencers. Apollo Go, initially tested in Changsha, has expanded to major cities like Beijing and Shenzhen, and began commercial operations in Wuhan in 2022. It now operates in over 15 cities, including international locations like Hong Kong, Dubai, and Abu Dhabi.
