Why Is the Apple Vision Pro Struggling to Gain Popularity?

Apple’s Vision Pro headset continues to struggle with consumer appeal. In 2024, Apple shipped 390,000 units, but projections for the latest quarter of 2025 show only 45,000 units expected. This is in stark contrast to the millions of iPhones, iPads, and MacBooks sold each quarter. Production by Luxshare, the assembler, halted at the beginning of 2025. Apple has significantly reduced its digital advertising for the Vision Pro by over 95% in major markets like the US and UK, and the international rollout has seen little expansion in 2025. Analysts point to the high cost, bulky design, and lack of native VisionOS apps as reasons for the device’s limited market penetration. Since its 2024 debut, the Vision Pro has faced criticism for its weight, discomfort during prolonged use, and short battery life. The platform’s lack of adoption is evident, with only 3,000 apps available, many of which are niche. This challenge is part of a wider downturn in the virtual reality market, where global VR headset shipments have fallen by 14%. Meta remains the dominant player with its Quest headsets, which are more affordable but less advanced than the Vision Pro. However, even Meta has reduced marketing efforts, indicating a broader slowdown in consumer interest in VR technology.
