Australia has officially approved the hypertension notification feature for the Apple Watch, allowing it to be used as a medical device in the country. The Therapeutic Goods Administration has listed the feature on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods. Announced by Apple in September, this feature detects patterns linked to elevated blood pressure using data from the optical heart sensor on compatible Apple Watch models. It alerts users to potential hypertension, recommending further checks with traditional methods. The feature is meant for adults over 22, excluding pregnant individuals and those already diagnosed with hypertension. It requires an Apple Watch Series 9 or later, paired with an iPhone 11 or later. Although Apple has the green light to activate the feature in Australia, the company hasn’t specified when it will be available. Typically, Apple activates such features through software updates or remote activation after regulatory approval. Hypertension notifications are already available in over 150 countries.
