Australia has approved the hypertension notification feature for the Apple Watch, allowing the tech giant to activate this capability for users in the country. The Therapeutic Goods Administration, Australia’s medical device regulator, has listed the feature as a medical device on the national register. Announced by Apple in September, this feature identifies patterns linked to high blood pressure through data from the optical heart sensor on compatible Apple Watch models. Instead of directly measuring blood pressure, it analyzes how blood vessels respond to heartbeats over a 30-day period. If signs of potential hypertension are detected, users receive a notification to seek traditional blood pressure testing. This feature is designed for adults aged 22 and older who are not pregnant and have not been previously diagnosed with hypertension. It requires an Apple Watch Series 9 or later, or an Apple Watch Ultra 2 or later, paired with an iPhone 11 or newer running the latest iOS version. While Apple has not specified when the feature will be available in Australia, it typically activates such features through a software update or remotely once regulatory approval is granted. Hypertension notifications are already available in over 150 countries.
