What details have been revealed about the June cybersecurity breach in Albemarle County?

Albemarle County recently concluded an investigation into a ransomware attack on its IT systems that occurred in June. The breach compromised personal and health information of numerous individuals associated with the county, including current and former government and public school employees, their dependents, residents, and others who had business with the county.

The attack began on June 10 and continued overnight, affecting a range of sensitive data. This included protected health information related to the county’s self-insured health plan, which, while not medical records, contained health-related details. Personal identifying information such as names, addresses, Social Security numbers, and various ID numbers were also exposed.

In response, Albemarle County has enhanced its cybersecurity measures and is offering free credit monitoring, fraud consultation, and identity restoration services to those affected. Details for enrolling in these services are available on the county’s website, with a registration deadline set for March 17, 2026.
