Millions of Google Chrome users have been alerted to potential security threats that could compromise their data. The Government of India has highlighted vulnerabilities in the browser that could allow cybercriminals to access sensitive information through deceptive links. The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) has classified this threat as high severity, urging immediate action.
Security experts have identified multiple weaknesses within Chrome that could be exploited to gain unauthorized access to users’ systems, potentially leading to data theft or system damage. Users interacting with malicious links or unsafe websites are particularly at risk, with the possibility of exposing passwords, documents, and other confidential information.
These vulnerabilities are primarily found in outdated versions of Chrome, affecting web content processing and media handling. The threat spans major platforms, including Windows, macOS, and Linux. Users are advised to update their browsers promptly to mitigate these risks.
Updating Chrome is simple: open the browser, click the three-dot menu, go to “Settings,” then “About Chrome,” and Chrome will automatically check for updates. Restart the browser after the update to ensure the changes take effect.
