Elon Musk’s company, X, has unveiled XChat, a new standalone messaging app now available for iPhone users. This app marks a shift from the previous model where messaging was integrated within the main X platform. XChat offers a dedicated space for conversations, calls, and group chats, distinguishing itself from the previous mixed-platform approach. While iOS users can access XChat via the App Store, Android users are still awaiting its release on Google Play.
XChat includes standard features like messaging, file sharing, and audio or video calls. It supports group chats with a significant number of participants and offers features such as message editing, message deletion for all participants, and disappearing messages. Notably, it includes an option to block screenshots within chats, a feature not commonly found in other messaging apps like WhatsApp and Telegram.
The app promises end-to-end encryption and PIN protection for messages, although its security has been questioned in some reports. This concern arises amid allegations against WhatsApp’s encryption claims, which Meta has denied.
XChat represents a strategic shift for X, moving away from the concept of an “everything app” where messaging was integrated with payments and content. Instead, XChat provides a focused messaging experience. The app is expected to replace X’s Communities feature, allowing large group sizes and potential future expansions.
iPhone users can download XChat from the App Store and log in with their existing X account to access contacts and conversations. The app’s user-friendly design facilitates easy navigation and usage. As XChat is in its early stages, further updates and improvements are anticipated. The app’s performance, security, and user retention will become clearer over time.
