iOS 26.5 is set to be released this May after extensive beta testing. While the update is relatively minor, it paves the way for significant features as Apple shifts its focus to iOS 27. Key highlights include end-to-end encryption for RCS in the Messages app and the introduction of ads in the Apple Maps app. A new Pride wallpaper is also part of the update, along with other minor enhancements.
The end-to-end encryption for RCS ensures that messages between supported iOS and Android devices remain private and secure, preventing third-party interception. Although tested in the iOS 26.4 beta, it was not included in the final release but has returned in the iOS 26.5 beta.
Apple Maps is preparing to feature localized ads in the U.S. and Canada, allowing businesses to place ads in search results and a new “Suggested Places” section. These ads will be clearly labeled and come with strong privacy protections, ensuring user location data is not linked to their Apple Account.
Additionally, iOS 26.5 introduces a dynamic, customizable Pride wallpaper to celebrate LGBTQ+ communities. The update also aims to extend iPhone features like notifications and Live Activities to third-party smartwatches and headphones in the EU, complying with the Digital Markets Act. Other changes in iOS 26.5 are minimal.
