Who is the Chinese start-up behind Google’s Android XR AR glasses?

Xreal, a Chinese start-up specializing in augmented reality, is preparing to launch its lightweight augmented reality glasses for the mass market by early 2026. Known as Project Aura, this product was unveiled at Google’s I/O developer conference in May. Competing with Apple and Meta, Google has chosen to supply the operating system, Android XR, while partnering with hardware manufacturers. This marks Google’s second XR venture, following a collaboration with Samsung on a VR headset. Project Aura boasts a field of view exceeding 70 degrees, powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset and Xreal’s XR-optimized X1S chip. According to Xreal’s co-founder Wu Kejian, the company’s expertise in optical engineering has led to the development of thinner lenses with wider fields of view.
