Apple has agreed to pay $250 million to settle a class-action lawsuit with consumers who claimed the company exaggerated the artificial intelligence capabilities of its new iPhones. Consumers alleged that the AI features, branded as Apple Intelligence and launched in June 2024, were not delivered as promised. The lawsuit highlighted that these features were absent in the iPhone 16, released in September 2024, and that the upgraded Siri and Notification Summary were delayed or disabled due to quality issues. Despite denying any wrongdoing, Apple will compensate eligible U.S. consumers who bought iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 models between June 2024 and March 2025, with payments ranging from $25 to $95. This settlement, affecting around 36 million devices, marks a significant precedent in addressing discrepancies between AI marketing claims and actual technological capabilities. As AI becomes more integrated into consumer products, this case underscores the growing scrutiny on AI performance claims by courts and regulators.
