Is Samsung trying to lure MediaTek away from TSMC?

Samsung’s foundry division is gaining momentum with a $16.5 billion chipmaking deal with Tesla and interest from companies like AMD for 2nm chip production. Recently, Samsung Electronics Chairman Jay Y. Lee made a discreet visit to Taiwan with a high-level delegation to meet with MediaTek’s CEO, Cai Lixing. This move suggests Samsung’s intention to attract MediaTek away from its usual partner, TSMC. MediaTek, which has historically collaborated with TSMC for chip production, is open to diversifying its partnerships. It has already engaged Intel for a packaging contract on Google’s 8th-gen TPU. Samsung sees an opportunity as TSMC struggles with limited 2nm capacity, while Samsung boasts ample capacity and a comprehensive suite of memory semiconductors. To entice MediaTek, Samsung may offer preferential access to memory chips for the upcoming Dimensity chipsets for mobile devices.
