Is Samsung opting for cheaper Chinese displays for the Galaxy S27?

Amidst rising component costs and a global memory crisis, Samsung is exploring cost-saving measures for its Galaxy S flagship series. The company is reportedly considering sourcing OLED panels for the upcoming Galaxy S27 from BOE, a Chinese supplier, which offers these panels at a lower price than Samsung Display. This move marks a shift from Samsung’s traditional reliance on its own OLED panels for flagship phones, although it has previously used suppliers like CSOT and BOE for mid-range models. Industry insiders reveal that Samsung has already sent a Request for Information to BOE and has been evaluating their panels, which have received an acceptable assessment. The potential $5 savings per panel could be substantial given Samsung’s shipment volumes. While there are concerns about possible compromises in display quality, the report suggests that BOE is equipped to meet Samsung’s specifications, as the standard OLED panel requirements for Galaxy S phones have remained consistent in recent years.
