British maritime authorities have raised a security alert after several commercial vessels reported encounters with armed skiffs near crucial international shipping routes in the Gulf of Aden. The UK Maritime Trade Operations agency highlighted a series of suspicious activities in these volatile waters, prompting concerns along the busy shipping lanes. Reports indicate that vessels have been approached by large skiffs equipped with ladders and weapons. Regional security forces are actively investigating these incidents, and international commercial shipping has been advised to remain vigilant.
The Gulf of Aden and the Bab al-Mandeb Strait are crucial chokepoints for global trade, linking the Red Sea to the Indian Ocean. Recently, a commercial vessel was intercepted by a suspicious small craft near this critical bottleneck, with the craft closing in to 100 meters before retreating when confronted by onboard security. This marks the second such incident within 24 hours, with another tanker previously targeted but managing to deter the threat with a warning shot.
Despite the tense encounters, no casualties or damage have been reported. The UKMTO has urged all vessels to exercise caution and report any suspicious activity as investigations continue. These incidents occur amid heightened tensions in global shipping routes, exacerbated by ongoing regional conflicts. The waters near Yemen have become a hotspot for piracy, with a recent hijacking of an oil tanker by armed men further underscoring the security challenges in the region.
