How is the Archdiocese of Detroit addressing AI in ministry?

The Archdiocese of Detroit is set to host a conference titled “Ministry in an AI Era” on June 11 at Sacred Heart Major Seminary. This event follows the release of Pope Leo XIV’s encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas, which emphasizes the protection of human dignity in the age of artificial intelligence. Organized by the archdiocese’s Department of Evangelization and Missionary Discipleship in collaboration with Magisterium AI, the conference aims to educate Catholic pastoral ministers on the impact of AI in ministry. Michael Chamberland and John Brahier have spearheaded the initiative, focusing on how AI can enhance human connection within parish ministries. The conference will feature sessions on AI safety, privacy, and practical applications, with insights from experts like Brendan Newell of Microsoft and Jeffrey Quesnelle of Nous Research. Attendees will explore how to integrate AI responsibly while adhering to Catholic social teachings, as outlined in the pope’s encyclical.
