Apple is working on a new security feature for iPhones that aims to protect users from theft. The feature will automatically lock an iPhone if it’s forcibly taken from the owner’s hand. By utilizing the device’s gyroscope, accelerometer, and other sensors, along with a paired Apple Watch, the system can detect when an iPhone has been abruptly moved away from the user’s wrist. Once activated, the phone locks and initiates Stolen Device Protection, preventing unauthorized access to personal information. This protection adds an extra layer of security when users are away from familiar places like home or work, requiring biometric authentication for sensitive actions such as accessing stored passwords or credit card information. Additionally, there are time delays for critical actions like changing an Apple Account password, enhancing security. Originally designed to safeguard against thieves who might observe a passcode before stealing a device, this feature ensures that access to apps and sensitive data is restricted. While Android devices already have a similar Theft Detection Lock feature, there is no indication yet of when Apple’s new security measure will be available.
