Can the Galaxy Watch help prevent muscle loss during GLP-1 therapy?

GLP-1 medications, popular for weight loss, are offered in both injectable and oral forms. As their use increases, medical research is turning its attention to the potential side effect of muscle loss. In response, Samsung, in collaboration with Massachusetts General Hospital, has initiated a study using the Galaxy Watch 8 to monitor muscle loss in patients on GLP-1 therapy.

The study will involve 100 adults, divided into two groups. One group will use the Galaxy Watch to track their body composition, while the other will follow standard advice given to those starting GLP-1 therapy. The goal is to assess whether continuous data from the Galaxy Watch can aid both patients and doctors in monitoring and reducing muscle loss.

Biometric data such as activity levels, body composition, and heart rate will be collected from the Galaxy Watch 8. Additionally, clinical-grade DXA scans will be used to track changes in body composition in both groups. This research aims to determine if insights from the Galaxy Watch can lead to improved health outcomes, particularly in preserving muscle mass.
