OpenAI is reportedly developing a smartphone designed to compete directly with the iPhone. This marks a significant shift from the company’s previous focus on non-phone hardware. The device, described as an “AI agent phone,” will emphasize a seamless, context-aware interface rather than traditional apps. To achieve this, OpenAI plans to control both the operating system and hardware. The phone is expected to feature a customized MediaTek Dimensity 9600 processor and advanced image processing capabilities. Luxshare Precision Industry is set to manufacture the device, while Sunny Optical will supply components, likely for the camera.
OpenAI’s collaboration with former Apple design chief Jony Ive initially focused on non-phone products, such as a smart speaker and other smart devices. However, the strategy has shifted towards developing a smartphone. The company has hired over 40 former Apple employees, sparking competition with Apple, which is also working on AI-driven products.
Mass production of OpenAI’s smartphone is now anticipated in early 2027, with projections of 30 million units shipped by 2028. This accelerated timeline aligns with OpenAI’s IPO plans and the growing competition in AI technology. If successful, OpenAI’s hardware could pose a significant challenge to Apple’s dominance in several product categories.
