Should you trust Samsung with your US passport?

Samsung Wallet continues to expand its capabilities, now allowing users in the United States to add their US passports to the app. This feature, developed in partnership with CLEAR, promises convenience at over 250 TSA checkpoints nationwide, offering a digital alternative to the traditional passport. However, this new capability raises concerns about privacy and practicality. While Samsung assures that passport information is encrypted on the device, the role of CLEAR, a private company, in handling verification data remains unclear. Additionally, the feature’s effectiveness is limited by the number of TSA checkpoints and the awareness of TSA agents regarding the digital passport. Furthermore, the reliance on a smartphone introduces potential issues such as battery failure, app crashes, or device theft. The digital passport is only valid for domestic travel, necessitating a physical passport for international trips. While Samsung’s initiative aims to position Galaxy phones as a central identity tool, this ambition requires careful consideration beyond the convenience narrative, especially since physical passports remain essential for international travel.
