What opportunities and threats does AI present to Hollywood?

At the AI On The Lot conference in Los Angeles, Hollywood creatives and tech experts gathered to discuss the transformative impact of AI on the entertainment industry. The event, which saw a significant increase in attendance, featured discussions on AI’s dual role as a tool for efficiency and a potential threat to jobs. Revelations Entertainment CEO Lori McCreary emphasized the need for industry standards and careful contract language regarding AI use, while highlighting its benefits in speeding up development and reducing production costs.

Eleven Labs announced a deal to license Stan Lee’s voice and likeness, showcasing AI’s potential in content creation. Dustin Blank from Eleven Labs praised AI’s ability to make the impossible possible, though he acknowledged limitations in controlling content once released. Native Foreign’s Nik Kleverov stressed the importance of tracking AI prompts to avoid copyright issues, while working on an AI-animation hybrid film.

Ryan Kavanaugh, promoting his new company Acme AI & FX, shared how AI reduced the budget for Doug Liman’s upcoming thriller. Despite concerns about job losses, industry veteran Albie Hecht argued that AI, like past technological advances, could create new opportunities and jobs. The conference, supported by Amazon MGM Studios, highlighted the growing interest and investment in AI within Hollywood.
